Building a modest capsule wardrobe that lasts
Fewer pieces, better made, all of them working together: a simple plan for a modest wardrobe you can wear from winter to summer.
A capsule wardrobe is a small collection of clothes that all work together. For modest dressing it is a gift: fewer decisions in the morning, and every outfit covered, layered and comfortable.
Start with the base
- Two long, loose dresses in neutral colours
- Wide-leg trousers and a long skirt
- Three long-sleeved tops in breathable cotton or linen
- One open abaya or long cardigan to layer over everything

Add colour slowly
Once the base is set, bring in colour through scarves and accessories. A scarf is the easiest way to change the whole feel of an outfit, and the cheapest to experiment with.
Buy the piece you will wear a hundred times, not the one you will wear once.
Through the seasons
- Summer: linen and cotton, light colours, one layer.
- Spring and autumn: add the long cardigan or a light jacket.
- Winter: wool layers underneath, a warm coat on top, the same base pieces.
